Short of long glass and Tilt/Shift options, Sony’s current lineup of lenses offers any landscape photographer all they need to round out a substantial bag. I leaning towards the A7R IV more, so the resolving power matters too. The venerable Tamron 90mm macro is widely used by naturalists and other pros who need top.
F1.8 and F2.8 is not a deciding factor for me, but Im more after the rendering and the color. I used my Sony 90mm f/2.8 macro to create this portrait of my Dad. I also really appreciated Sony’s focus peaking that aided me in getting my extremely shallow focus set right where I wanted. I am wondering which of these lenses would be better for portraits. I made a determination that f/5.6 revealed just enough detail on the nearest edge of the first succulent allowing the remainder to drift into soft focus with beautiful bokeh. One of the nice features when working with a macro on a Sony mirrorless camera is the ability to see how aperture changes affect depth-of-field in real time.įor the image of this wild succulent, I started at f/11 and worked my way down to f/2.8.

Externally, the lens has a focus hold button, a focus limiter switch, and a sliding focus collar to switch between AF and manual focus, and Sony claims that the body is dust- and moisture-resistant. Minimum focus distance is 11.0” (28cm) with a 1:1 maximum magnification ratio. The lens also has a Nano AR coating, optical image stabilization, a near-silent sonic-type AF system driving two “floating” focus groups for precision close-ups, and adopts an internal focus mechanism, so there’s no lens extension or rotation of the front group.

Those of you who shoot insects may disagree and wish you had a longer focal length.ĭesigned for Sony’s A7 full-frame mirrorless camera series but also compatible with APS-C size E-mount bodies (where it has a equivalent angle of view to that of 135mm), the 90mm f2.8 Macro G OSS features a complex optical design consisting of 15 elements arranged in 11 groups, and uses aspherical, ED and Super ED elements to combat spherical aberration and distortion, and to reduce color fringing (lateral CA). Personally, I think the 90mm is the perfect length for a macro lens.
Fortunately there was not a hint of a breeze until the end of my session and this allowed for ease of focusing.

Personally, I thought the OOF of the 90mm was quite decent, and that it makes a good portrait lens (likely not as good as the Zeiss will be, but definitely still usable for portrait).To really get limited depth-of-field, I used both a Fotodiox Pro 10mm and 16mm extension tubes with Sony NEX mounts. But the Sigma seems to be the better choice. Not saying the Sony is a slouch in terms of sharpness.
And Dustin had just reviewed the Sony a couple of weeks before the Sigma. It's is the OUT OF FOCUS area you want to check on a macro, when using it for portraits (with many, the OOF bokeh can be 'harsh'). Dustin Abbott, Christopher Frost and a couple of others have reviewed the Sigma and it is indeed sharper than the Sony 90mm.
